UNVERIFIED = not settled by a manual page or a user reading. Each one comes with the check that settles it.

0. Headline findings: what the current plan misses or gets wrong

  1. The 88 A/C amplifier needs an engine-speed (igniter) signal.
  2. Facts: amp pin 5 is BLK "IGNITER" (M5-609). RM077U AC-46 (22R-E/EFI amp table): "5–7: start the engine → approx. 10–14 V; stop the engine → no voltage".
  3. On the 3VZ the igniter IG− line fed both the tach and the A/C amp, as two BLK branches (M5-607: check-connector IG− BLU-WHT → BLK "A/C AMPLIFIER" and BLK "TACH (INST CLSTR)").
  4. The plan feeds only N5-6 (tach). Unless the amp branch is spliced body-side off N5-6, it arrives on its own N5 cavity. Candidate: N5-16 B, which the plan currently leaves empty.
  5. Without this signal the amp most likely won't engage the clutch (UNVERIFIED).
  6. Check: ohmmeter from body-side N5-6 and N5-16 to A/C amp connector pin 5 (BLK, behind the glove box).
  7. N3-10 W-R is a live key-ON feed, not a dead wire.
  8. M5-609 draws the A/C idle-up solenoid feed (WHT-RED or BLK-RED) from the IGN fuse (R/B #1). The IGN 7.5A fuse also powers the EFI main relay coil (M5-607 relay pin 1 BLK-YEL "IGN FUSE"; M5-608 IGN fuse output list).
  9. If the loose N3-10 shorts to ground, it blows IGN 7.5A. The EFI main relay drops, the 98 ECM loses +B and the engine dies.
  10. Insulate N3-10 (and N3-9) individually. Verify with a meter: key ON, N3-10 → 12 V.
  11. N5-1 L is most likely the circuit opening relay's pump output (Fp). M5-607 shows COR Fp BLU → pump and check-connector FP BLU; the 3VZ check connector is on the engine harness.
  12. So N5-1 is live whenever the pump runs (cranking, and running).
  13. It is also the most convenient trigger for the DW100 relay (Relay B coil, pin 86) right at the adapter.
  14. UNVERIFIED. Check: key ON, ground N5-8 → N5-1 reads 12 V.
  15. The 88 4WD indicator switch may be a 2-wire switch with a WHT-BLK ground lead in the old engine harness. M5-607 shows "WHT-BLK → 4WD IND SW" tied to the engine ground bus.
  16. The plan assumes the switch grounds through its case. If the salvaged branch has 2 wires, the WHT-BLK one must go to ground, or the 4WD light and the ECM 4WD input never switch.
  17. Check: count the wires at the switch plug.
  18. Don't plug the 88 alternator plug onto the 98 alternator, even if the shell fits.
  19. 98 G1: 1 = L, 2 = IG, 3 = S (EWD319U p.70).
  20. 88 plug as drawn: 3 RED = IG (ENGINE fuse), 2 YEL = L (CHARGE 7.5A → lamp), 1 WHT = S, tied to the B wire (M5-604).
  21. The numbering and order differ. Use the 98 Engine No.2 wire (EA1) and connect by function. Its EA1-3 B-W is already the 5VZ starter-50 lead, so the "new 12–14 AWG starter-50 wire" isn't needed: feed EA1-3 from N5-9.
  22. N5-9 carries the starter-solenoid current, not just a signal. On the 88 M/T, starter relay contact out (pin 2) → BLK → starter 50 and TCCS STA, cold-start injector and start-injector time switch (M5-604). That's why N5-9 is the large terminal.
  23. Block A must be built for solenoid pull-in current. Use a ring/stud or heavy splice, 12–14 AWG from N5-9 to EA1-3 / terminal 50. Only the STA tap can be 18–20 AWG.
  24. The plan says "16 AWG II1-6 to block A", which is fine for STA, but block A itself must be heavy-duty.
  25. The A/C "on" signal polarity to the 98 ECM (ACT) is contradictory in the 98 manuals.
  26. RM580U AC-95: amp pin 3 (ACT) = battery voltage with the clutch engaged, below 1.0 V when not. That is active-high, which fits the plan's diode-from-clutch.
  27. RM580U DI-159: "ACT–E1: A/C switch OFF 9–14 V; A/C switch ON at idling 5 or more". That reads like an ECM pull-up, i.e. active-low.
  28. If ACT is pulled up inside the ECM, the diode scheme never changes state: no A/C idle-up, and the IAC may not hold idle with the compressor on.
  29. Bench check: ECM powered, key ON, E12-5 open. About 0 V = active-high, so the diode plan is right. About 9–14 V = active-low, so you need a small relay or transistor that grounds ACT when the clutch is on.
  30. Supporting evidence for active-high: the 88 V6 ECU took its A/C input (S-20 B-W) straight off the clutch feed (M5-609 "(V6 ONLY) BLK-WHT TCCS ECU CONN S PIN #20" spliced into the clutch line).
  31. Several N5 wires are still unidentified, and they may not all be dead. N5-3 BR, N5-7 G-Y, N5-11 BR and N5-16 B. Identify each one (section 8, test 4) before taping it off.
  32. In particular, a BR on the body side could be a ground that some body device got through the old engine harness.
  33. The plan dropped "Relay A" for the W-L bus (adapter-build-list.md wires block B straight to N5-12; conversion-wiring-table.md and harness-strip-list.md still list Relay A).
  34. Straight to N5-12 is OK electrically if N5-12 is the relay output: the 88 EFI main relay used to carry ECU +B, the O2 heater, VSVs, the COR and the 3VZ fuel pump (M5-607).
  35. But the 98 W-L bus can draw up to about 9.5 A cold (research D), all through one small N5 terminal and an unknown-gauge body B-Y wire. Make the docs agree. Measure the body-side B-Y gauge; if it's thinner than 0.85 mm² (18 AWG), keep Relay A.
  36. Towing package A/C cut relay. M5-609 shows an "A/C CUT RLY (W/ TOWING PACKAGE)" and an "A/C TEMP SW (W/ TOWING PACKAGE)" in the A/C power feed. If the truck has it and the temp switch was on the 3VZ, the A/C behavior changes. UNVERIFIED; see section 3.

Does a gauge sender belong in this port?Yes. RM580U lists the same 1344 adhesive for "Oil pressure sender gauge" in both the 5VZ-FE Lubrication and Engine Mechanical SSM tables. So Toyota fitted gauge senders to this 5VZ port on gauge-equipped models (T100: research C, RM507U)RM580U PP "SSM: Lubrication (5VZ-FE)" and "SSM: Engine Mechanical (5VZ-FE)"
Thread: 5VZ port vs 88 3VZ senderUNVERIFIED. Neither RM580U nor RM077U prints a thread size. [assumed: Toyota taper 1/8 PT (≈1/8 BSPT, 28 TPI) on both]Check: thread pitch gauge (28 TPI = 1/8 PT); hand-thread the 88 sender 2–3 turns into the 5VZ port (or into the removed 98 switch's port) before fitting the engine
Physical fitUNVERIFIED. The 88 pulse sender is a larger can than the 98 switch. It sits next to the oil filter union, and you're also fitting the 88 oil pan and dipstick kitCheck: trial-fit with the filter on. Confirm the filter, filter wrench and the dipstick tube clear
Electrical connector98 O1 is a 1-pin plug on G-W. The 88 sender has its own 1-pin terminal (L-B on the engine side at N3-8, User). They don't mateBest (no splice): salvage the 88 sender's plug with its whole L-B branch from the old 3VZ harness, the same way the plan salvages the reverse and 4WD branches. Re-pin it into the adapter's N3-8 and drop II3-22 G-W (de-pin it). Alternative: a pigtail with the 88 sender's mating terminal crimped to a new wire, landed on II3-22 G-W
GroundA pulse sender grounds through its threads. Toyota's adhesive on 2–3 threads leaves metal-to-metal contact. Don't use PTFE tape. Make sure the block-to-battery-negative strap is in (section 6)Check: ohms from the sender body to battery − < 0.5 Ω
Will the 88 gauge read right?Yes, if the sender is the original 88 (3VZ) part: a matched pulse sender/receiver pair (RM077U BE-30). Don't use the 98 switch (it would peg/zero the gauge the wrong way)Check: RM077U BE-30 bulb test on the bench. Then compare against a mechanical gauge once: idle ≥ 29 kPa (4.3 psi), 3,000 rpm 245–520 kPa (36–75 psi) (RM580U LU-1)
Path through N3-8Cluster gauge → C3 → body wire → N3-8 → engine-side L-B → sender → block ground. The adapter only needs a straight pin: N3-8 ↔ sender wireUser (N3-8 L-B); M5-611

3c. The 98 A/C circuit (EWD319U p.235)

3d. What the user needs

Now (88/3VZ compressor, 98 clutch swapped on, 88 amp and controls):

  1. Clutch: N3-3 (B-W) → block C → II3-25 LG-B → 98 A2 1-pin clutch plug. If the 98 clutch is on the compressor, the 98 A2 plug mates directly. If the 3VZ clutch is still there, crimp the mating 1-pin onto its lead.
  2. Clutch current ≈ 3.8 A. 18 AWG is fine.
  3. The compressor body must be grounded to the block, with the block strapped to battery −.
  4. ECM A/C signal: E12-5 ACT from block C through a 1N4004 (stripe toward the ECM), only after test 13 shows ACT is active-high. Otherwise use a relay: coil from block C to ground; NO contact grounds ACT, or feeds it 12 V, whichever test 13 calls for.
  5. Engine-speed signal to amp pin 5: wire whichever N5 cavity reaches amp pin 5 (test 4) to the same tach node as N5-6 (II3-15). Run test 12.
  6. Insulate N3-9 and N3-10. Use the resistor fallback above only if needed.
  7. AC1 (E12-16): de-pinned (no WOT cut-out, per your decision).

Anything the 88 dash expects from the engine harnessCovered: CEL, tach, temp, oil, charge (via the alt plug), 4WD, speed (outbound), STP. The A/C amp engine-speed input is the one gapFinding 1

7. Things that might be missed

  1. A/C amp engine-speed input (finding 1).
  2. N3-10 live IGN feed; a short kills the EFI relay coil fuse (finding 2).
  3. N5-1 = COR Fp? Live while the pump runs, and handy for Relay B (finding 3).
  4. 4WD switch ground lead (finding 4).
  5. 88 vs 98 alternator plug pin order (finding 5).
  6. EA1-3 is the starter-50 wire; block A carries solenoid current (finding 6). The 88 solenoid feed comes through the ignition switch ST1 contacts (M5-604); the 88 already carried a 3VZ reduction-starter solenoid that way. 5VZ solenoid draw is UNVERIFIED but of the same class.
  7. ACT polarity contradiction (finding 7).
  8. Unidentified N5-3 BR, N5-7 G-Y, N5-11 BR, N5-16 B (finding 8).
  9. Relay A dropped, inconsistently across the docs (finding 9).
  10. Towing-package A/C cut relay / temp switch (finding 10).
  11. II3-24 shield. It only matters if you re-use the 98 shielded SIL wire to DLC3. Then ground the shield at one end only (II3-24 → EC). With a plain short wire to DLC3-7, II3-24 can be de-pinned (UNVERIFIED that the shield is needed; OBD works over short unshielded runs).
  12. Sensor-ground splice (BR-B E2). Cut A/T branches on the branch side only (strip list).
  13. Fusible link for the 98 alternator. 60 A rated (SS-38) vs 88 AM1 80A (60A-alt trucks). Read your truck's AM1 link label and the 98 alternator tag.
  14. 88 ENGINE 15A loads now include the 98 alternator IG and the cluster bus. No new big loads.
  15. EFI 15A fuse: confirm 15A; Mitchell's "117A" is a misprint.
  16. 98 MIL vs 88 bulb: same low-side scheme. The 98 W spec is "idling 9–14 V, IG ON below 3.0 V" (DI-159). Bulb wattage UNVERIFIED but similar class. If it's been changed to an LED, check polarity.
  17. 88 tach input (coil-negative style) vs the 98 igniter EXT pulse: works per Monch (T100 same igniter). If the A/C amp also hangs on this line, check that both still see a signal (tests 11, 12). Never put 12 V on it (RM077U BE-26).
  18. 88 cluster speed reed → 98 ECM 5 V pull-up: only works if nothing else pulls the line to 12 V (PPS computer, if fitted).
  19. DLC3 pin 16 7.5A constant: take it from a constant source, not the EFI fuse (ECM BATT) and not the IGN fuse. A fused tap at the battery or R/B #2 HAZ-HORN feed is fine.
  20. 98 EFI relay function: reproduced by the 88 EFI main relay (IGN-fused coil, EFI-fused contact). Same topology as the 98 (research D). The 98 ECM doesn't control its own main relay (no MREL in DI-158/159), so nothing is lost.
  21. Cold-start injector / time-switch / NSW branches of the 88 STA (N5-9) are now gone. Make sure nothing on the 98 harness side is left back-fed from block A except II1-6 and EA1-3.
  22. Bluetop injectors: measure about 12–14 Ω. The 88 V6 used an injector resistor (M5-607 "RESISTOR" on IG2 B-R), so 88-era injectors are low-impedance and must not go on the 98 ECM.
  23. Idle-up VSV wires: insulate both N3-9 and N3-10 individually inside the adapter's N3 half (not just taped at the bundle).
  24. N3-2 R is ENGINE-fuse key-ON power (M5-612). If the reverse branch is ever unplugged at the adapter, it's live.
  25. Compressor ground: both the 88 and 98 clutches ground through the compressor body (AC-15, EWD p.235). The 98 bracket/compressor on a 5VZ block needs the block strap.
  26. PS pump choice decides whether PSSW idle-up exists.
  27. 5VZ oil sender can vs oil filter and 88 dipstick/oil-pan kit clearance (section 1).
